Each piece is shaped by hand and fired in the studio kiln. Even in the same shape, every piece comes out a little different in colour and surface. That’s part of handmade stoneware.

The maker
Shizuku Miyata
Shizuku trained in Seto, one of Japan’s oldest pottery towns, and opened this studio in an old storehouse in 2019.
She works with clay from the nearby hills and glazes made from wood ash and iron. The aim is simple: pieces you reach for at every meal, not ones kept for best.
“Pieces that feel more like yours the more you use them.”
Sample noteThe maker and her story are fictional, and the photo is a stock image.
Care
Caring for your pieces
Stoneware lasts for years with a little care.
Before first use
Soak the piece in warm water for a while; it helps prevent stains. For white-slip (kohiki) pieces, we recommend “medome”: simmering them in the cloudy water left from rinsing rice for about 15 minutes. It seals the clay.
Microwave and dishwasher
Microwave safe. Dishwasher safe, but hand washing keeps them looking good for longer. Not for the oven or a direct flame.
After washing
Let pieces dry completely before putting them away. Stacking them damp can cause mould or odours.
About the fine cracks
The fine crackle in some glazes is called “kannyu”. It isn’t damage; it forms as the piece cools. Over time it may take on a little colour from tea, and the piece changes with you.
